Grain Edit
Please check out Grain Edit, a graphic design blog that my former roommate started. I write an occasional post about new designers that I like. It’s a great resource for rare out of print design from the 50/60s as well as interviews with new designers, fun stuff, book giveaways, mustaches, and lots of images. Tell all your friends!

the darjeeling limited

July 24th, 2007

just saw the trailer for the new wes anderson movie, the darjeeling limited. looks like more of a move toward the royal tenenbaums(!) than (his last movie) the life aquatic (which i hated).

anyway, it looks really fun.

hey!

my goals for this summer were to get an internship and to make a new website. i finally got an internship, so now i have to make the website. so i won’t be putting anything up here for a little bit while i work on that.

(laughter)

in the meantime, i came across a few *hilarious* skittles commercials. check ‘em out: here, here, and here.

here’s a quick image of what the future napkinman site may look like.

One of the funniest videos I’ve seen in a long long time.

John Vanderslice

October 14th, 2006

My second of three projects is a poster project. And since my teacher is a big time gig poster designer, we were given cd’s for different bands. I got John Vanderslice. Anyway, in reference to an earlier post regarding a book project I have to do using photography I thought I would pass on the John Vanderslice Photo page. I believe he uses a Leica M6, and maybe a digital camera as well.

I was impressed at the amount of photos/galleries he as made over the years, and the quality. When I think of a musician chronicling “being on the road”, it usually sounds pretentious and lame. “Just worry about the music, man!” But I was surprised by the thoughtfulness and consistency (and breadth) of his work. Really cool.

Plus he has a rad last name: Vanderslice! Just say it aloud, you’ll love it!

Hot Designs!

October 12th, 2006

we just finished a big logo project in my design class. the project is to design three personal symbols based on 1) personal characteristics/idiosyncracies 2) the meanings of one’s names 3) and initials.

to clear up possible confusion, the first symbol is a combination of a first aid cross and a brush stroke.

also, none of the symbols were created with a computer — all were hand inked with a compass, brush, and photocopier.

I got a haircut!

September 7th, 2006

when i was 7 i used to get buzz-cuts all the time! then one time when i turned 24 i grew my hair out to a wacky length and height. later while still 24, i fashioned a beard, similar in length and breadth to my hair. it turned into a big bushy, hairy, complicated mess. still later, while still 24, i cut it all off. now i look as close to 7 years old as when i was 7!

the whole process was thoroughly documented by professional photographers. go to the collection!

Whizzz!

September 5th, 2006

i’m back in school finally, and loving every minute with my crew. this semester i have to make a photo-based book for a graphic design class. exciting, no? it’s all fun until you shred your thumbs off with an x-acto knife while binding, and get blood on a member of your crew’s powerbook.

while brainstorming for projects, i try to research as much as possible, so i only take what’s *really* good from what has already been done. no seriously, it’s difficult for me to shoot with a concept, and easy to just go for a “look”. i’m including a few photo-based links that i think are pretty fabulous in terms of content/ideas and aesthetic quality. mike-slack.com, jasonfulford.com, and jandlbooks.org.

i have an idea of something i want to try for said book project, but i will wait until the aforementioned time to disclose said facts.

sorry about the last post

August 30th, 2006

that last post was a joke. i didn’t do anything to the blog all summer. ha ha! sorry.

oh, and about those radiohead tickets, i didn’t get them. i waited and waited, and clicked when i was supposed to click. i smacked the computer too. but some friends said the show was great. great!
